Cycle helmets are marketed as safety equipment. The lack of marking or other information is therefore of concern, because absence of these markings could render equipment ineffective.
To progress and promote safety of cycle helmets particularly regarding warning information required, NGS (Northern Group Systems) designed and produced an eye-catching poster and leaflet. The leaflet contains information on what users and purchasers of cycle helmets should look for, if they want to choose the right helmet with particular reference to the EN 1078 cycle helmet standard.
The poster was designed to be visually stimulating in order to promote interest with the target audience. It directs people to this website and the leaflet for further information.

Distribution of the promotional material will help address the deficiency at consumer level regarding marking and labelling issues. It will also be a useful training aid for people, particularly distributors and retailers that were targeted as part of the market surveillance initiative as they will gain an appreciation of the information that should accompany the products they supply.
Various distribution channels are being used to circulate the promotional material in order to target as large an audience as possible with the product safety message. Distribution channels will include the media, general public, suppliers, retailers and safety organisations such as ROSPA and Road Safety Committees, leisure and activity facilities, cycling clubs and workplaces will also be targeted. The information leaflet will be made available to all 26 District Councils in Northern Ireland for inclusion in websites and newsletters and for circulation to Home Safety Officers and via other relevant channels.
The leaflet and poster were launched to coincide with National Bike Week, in June 2010.
